This area is known for its trout fisheries and salmon fishing. Some of the best in the country. Manistee may derive from an Ojibwe Indian word meaning River with islands at its mouth. This area was known for its huge white pine logs, which were floated down the river to the port of Manistee and on to lumber mills in Grand Rapids, Milwaukee and Chicago.
